Pope’s Missio of 2/13/2021

“When our faith is reduced to empty words, unconcerned with the lives and needs of others, the creed we profess proves inconsistent with the life we lead.”

Pope Francis has a way of articulating things I feel so well.

I feel disturbed about the church’s focus on abortion above all other issues. For most Catholics, they aren’t choosing abortion in their personal lives. It’s not “their” sin. But as a topic of concern, it has primary focus.

But what’s not being talked about is very important. Too often, abortion has become an alternative to action in other areas and not just in Catholic churches. Specifically, I think that people have lost empathy for those less fortunate, in part because nobody is reminding them about the poor, the disabled, and the prisoners, except for the politicians who are against all of those people. But, for some, if they’re contributing money towards Pro-Life or standing in front of a clinic with a sign, they don’t have to look beyond at the people who are suffering. And the evidence of that is their support for those Pro-Life politicians who are against the very people Jesus calls blessed in the Sermon on the Mount. It’s an ugly contradiction.

And let’s face it seeing suffering is painful. Dealing with the homeless, the prisoners, or even the disabled may make someone uncomfortable. And, of course, it often costs money to help others. Sad
