Shall we walk?

A big heart, empathy, and compassion–

Sometimes, I listen well, offer compassion and empathy. Sometimes, I receive.

What is the secret? Do I take a pulse on how you are doing? Am I able to walk with you, to be there? How well can I listen, just listen in that moment?

I think of Jesus in the gospel of John. I am struck by how Jesus always walks with others. Is love mainly walking with, letting what needs to be said or unsaid flow with the steps?

We lost that walking time during the pandemic, can we get it back? Can we still find time to see others, really see and hear others?  Phones and zoom take away so much of the easiness of a walking conversation. Do you feel heard? Did I understand well? Are you, my friend, ok? Or, have I left you at loose ends, uncertain? Or, have you been guiding me?

And what is empathy really? Is it a listening to understand, to know how someone feels, or merely hubris? How can I know what you feel? How can you know what I feel?

Do no harm. Listen intently. Ask if uncertain. Love. Mostly love, and a willing ear. What can I do? Can I help? Can you? Are suggestions wanted, or are they clutter in the chaos?

Shall we walk together?
